When my brothers and sister and I started having our own families, it became real difficult for any of us with little ones to be away from our homes on Christmas day. One of the last times everyone got together at our parents, we all woke up Christmas morning and the two little girl grandchildren got confused as to who's presents were who's. Those presents you don't wrap, like baby buggies and play kitchens were the source of confusion. It was a very tearful event. That was when we decided to alter our holiday.
So, we implemented 'Brunch'. For an hour, some time late morning, we would all gather for some nourishment and trading of gifts, then, we'd return to our homes. The fare was put together by each of us supplying one or two goodies - cocktail sausages, bagels and lox, orange juice, egg nog, scrambled eggs, bacon, donuts, whatever typical morning fare anyone liked! Oh, and, a big carafe of coffee!
We usually did dinner on our own, placing more emphasis on the brunch than a big feast. It gave the mommies a day that was more relaxing. There were so many goodies to munch on, no one was really very hungry, anyway. We could chill and enjoy the day, play with our new 'toys' and not be running here, there and everywhere. The children got to stay and play with their own toys, too!. It was just a far better idea than dragging our babies away from home on Christmas day.
It has worked for us ever since!
Thank you for letting me share that. Merry Christmas!
