Story Time

Wabi-Sabi Print Give Away Winners Announced

I shared this book for Friday Finds. A gift in the mail from my friend Cheryl. The story of a young girl and her box of magical yarn transforms a community....Truly inspired.

This got me to thinking of storytime with our boys.....

I loved laying on our bed.... one on each side.... they were so content to snuggle up and listen.....no matter how many times we read the same story.....they were right there...in the moment...soaking it up.

One of their favourtie stories was Bruce Moose and the What-Ifs....

I remembered the premise of the story, but I couldn't remember the details....the title... just the concept of worry and what-ifs....

John and Bryce were in the kitchen so I asked John do you remember that What-If storybook we used to read the boys?..... and Bryce chimes in Bruce the Moose...I loved that book...... such a good story.

Oh my gosh...he's 22 and he still remembers that! Isn't that fantastic.....Now that speaks to the power of a good story.

This lead me to thinking .... how different things are today. There are so many distractions in our lives.... technology is everywhere....Heck, I'm never without my iPhone. I'm rarely shut-off. It must be difficult for parents to 'shut-off' and simply read storybooks...

But what a gift it is.... quiet, conectedness, peace.... Transformative....

Thank you for this trip down memory lane Cheryl..... Here's to snuggles and stories and quiet moments....

I'd love to hear about a favourite storybook in your family.....

xo,

p.s. The winners of my Friday Finds....little print give away are:
Jill Ruskamp, Marilyn Gallas and Sharon Baker. Please email me your address. I will have the prints ready to mail in a few days.... xo

First, a BIG thank you to Cheryl for the most beautiful story book  .... check out the illustrator's name...... 'fraid it's not my hubby.... 'smile'....but so cool. The book is a work of art...extraordinary....The story.... so sweet and hope-filled.... Also in the package....two lovely bars of soap from Anthro.....picture perfect!! Can't wait to try your favourite soap Cheryl. But, I'm not going to open them just yet... I believe a few more photos are in order..... Thank you lovely.

Before I move on....
So many friends, from near and far.... sent cards and gifts.... during our cancer journey. Please know... we appreciate each and every gesture..... I hope to share photos of all the lovelies.... over the next few months.....I wish I kept up.... with the thank you posts and notes during our journey.....But honestly... when you are in-cancer.... you do what you can do....and some days... that's simply surviving.

I'm so thankful for everything.... There are days.... all the kindness.... encouragement.... generosity.....completely overwhelms me... and tears begin to flow..... I will be...forever grateful.

I also received a copy of Decorate with Flowers by Holly Becker & Leslie Shewing...It's a beauty.....I've only had time to flip through.....but from what I've seen so far.....it's full to the rim with lovely inspiration. I'm saving it...for a little 'me' time..... When all is quiet....and I can really soak it up.

More on it soon....  LOVE it.

Okay... this didn't come in the mail.... It's simply a shot of the 4 x 6 prints I made this week.... I'm so pleased with how they came out.... simple, sweet reminders of perfectly...imperfect....wabi-sabi.....goodness....

and whatever comes to mind when you think of 'perfectly imperfect'

Read on for a little more on 'perfectly imperfect'.....

Next weeks theme ....Tuesday, April 22nd.

SIMPLE

I can't wait to see what you share.

Today's Image

Have you heard of Wabi Sabi?

I know some of you have.... in fact a few lovelies mentioned it in the comments below last week's for the love of posting.

I stumbled on Wabi-Sabi a few months back.....bopping around pinterest....This lead me down a never ending road of wabi-sabi inspiration.

Wabi-Sabi encompasses everything I/many of us LOVE.... in decor....accessories.....life.....  it's perfectly imperfect..... and Oh my.... how I LOVE everything about it.....

So.....What is wabi-sabi?

According to wikipedia

Wabi-sabi represents a comprehensive Japanese world view or aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.'

Characteristics of the wabi-sabi aesthetic include asymmetryasperity (roughness or irregularity), simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy and appreciation of the ingenuous integrity of natural objects and processes.

'sigh'.....

Found HERE on pinterest....

Wabi-sabi is the marriage of the Japanese wabi, meaning humble, and sabi, which connotes beauty in the natural progression of time. Together, the phrase invites us to set aside our pursuit of perfection and learn to appreciate the simple, unaffected beauty of things as they are. To create a true wabi-sabi environment, one must slowly strip away excess and learn to be satisfied living in the moment.

OH YES.... indeed..... Wabi-Sabi suits me so.....

Found here.

Wabi Sabi is the Japanese philosophy that looks at beauty as something imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. It is more than just how something looks, it is also how it makes you feel... It is often asymmetric or irregular and has a simple and modest honesty to it.

Tell me.... does the concept of wabi-sabi speak to you too?

This lovely dried rose from my stash........seemed just right for today's 'perfectly imperfect' theme.

You may notice...it's similar to last week's TT image....this time... more light..... than dark...

Today's Wabi-Sabi Recipe - Both Photos

Processed in LR.

I applied an auto tone, and added a little extra boost of contrast.

I bumped up the clarity to +10 and reduced the saturation and vibrance each to -24. Using the adjusment brush I added a little extra clarity to the rose.... to bring out the lovely details.

I also added a hint of magenta... using the tone curve.

then....Into Photoshop to add a touch of texture

a layer of Waterfront 18 at soft light blend mode, 78% opacity...masking it off the bottle and rose. Next, I added a curves adjustment layer to deepen the color in the rose...just a tad.

Finally the type.........That was that.... : )

::

Here's a peek at waterfront 18....

p.s. That's what I love about textures too..... so 'perfectly imperfect'......

Here we are a full week into April.... Oh my... how times flies....

I'm gearing up for some exciting stuff around here.... a few BIG announcements coming soon...... I'm close to bursting......

In the meantime... I'm celebrating .. For the love of... perfectly imperfect......

I love that this old bottle shows the reflections from our dining room walls (picture frames, windows....life).... so perfectly imperfect.....

Today's Recipe - Both Images

Processed in LR.

I darkened the shadows, bumped down the blacks. I added a tone curve to accentuate the highlights and moody down the shadows. I desaturated the orange in the HSL panel. Finally, I added a warm split tone in both the shadows and highlights.

Into Photoshop to add some texture.

I added a layer of Waterfront 7 (inverted) set to screen blend mode at 47% opacity...masking it off the bottle and rose.

Then the type.....

and....That was that.... : )

Here is the magic version of waterfront 7.
